About

An ingrowing toenail is a spike or edge of nail that pierces the skin alongside the nail bed. It's painful, often infected, and almost never gets better on its own. There are two routes — conservative care for first-time cases and surgical resolution for recurrent ones.

Options

Two routes

Conservative care

For first-time or mild cases. The offending spike is carefully removed, the skin is treated, and you're given aftercare instructions to prevent recurrence. Most cases settle within days.

Nail surgery

Partial nail avulsion under local anaesthetic — the problem edge is removed and phenol applied to prevent regrowth. Permanent, day-case, with a clear aftercare protocol.

Nail surgery — what to expect

1
Pre-op consult
Examination, medical history, and a clear conversation about what's involved and the recovery.
2
Local anaesthetic
Two small injections at the base of the toe — the only uncomfortable part, and it passes quickly.
3
The procedure
The offending edge of nail is removed and phenol is applied for around three minutes to prevent regrowth. You feel nothing.
4
Dressing
A bulky sterile dressing is applied; you walk out in an open-toed shoe or sandal.
5
Aftercare
Daily saltwater bathing, redress as instructed. Follow-up at one week.
Phenolisation

Phenol is a chemical that destroys the cells of the nail matrix in the area treated. It's been the standard for partial nail avulsion for decades — success rates are above 95% and the cosmetic result is excellent (the nail simply grows a little narrower).

Asked often

About ingrowing toenails

How long until I can wear normal shoes?
You'll walk out the same day in an open-toed shoe or sandal, and most patients are back in normal footwear within 2–3 days.
Will the nail grow back?
If phenol is used (standard practice), the section removed is permanent. The rest of the nail grows as normal.
Can I drive afterwards?
Not the same day — the anaesthetic affects sensation. Arrange a lift home and rest with the foot elevated.
Is it covered by Bupa or WPA?
Nail surgery is covered by many Bupa and WPA policies. Please check your cover before booking.
