About

Most foot pain is mechanical — the foot is doing more work than it's built for, or in a way it's not built for. The job is to work out where, why, and what to change. Some cases settle with stretching and shoe changes. Some need orthoses. Few need anything more.

Details

Conditions seen most often

Plantar fasciitis
Sharp pain under the heel, worst with the first steps in the morning. Treatable — usually.
Achilles tendinopathy
Pain or thickening at the back of the heel. Eccentric loading is the foundation of treatment.
Morton's neuroma
A nerve thickening between toes 3 and 4. Tingling, numbness, the feeling of standing on a marble.
Metatarsalgia
Ball-of-foot pain. Often pressure-related and very responsive to padding and footwear changes.
Posterior tibial dysfunction
Pain on the inside of the ankle, often with a flattening arch. Bracing and orthoses help.
Walkthrough

How the assessment works

1
History
When did it start. What makes it worse. What you've already tried. Footwear and activity.
2
Static examination
Joints, range of motion, areas of tenderness, skin and nails.
3
Dynamic assessment
Watching you walk — sometimes barefoot, sometimes in your usual shoes.
4
Plan
What it is, what to do, and whether you need to come back.
Heel spurs

A heel spur is a finding on X-ray, not a diagnosis. Many people have spurs without pain; many with plantar fasciitis have no spur. Treating the fascia, not the spur, is what settles the pain.

Asked often

About foot & heel pain

Will I need orthoses?
Sometimes. Often a shoe change, stretching, or a temporary insole is enough. We'll only recommend orthoses if there's a clear case for them.
Should I see a GP first?
No — you're welcome to book directly. If a scan or specialist opinion would help, I'll tell you and write to your GP.
